Buying a wheelchair accessible vehicle

A wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) is a car or van converted so a wheelchair user can travel in it. Choosing the right one starts with how you want to travel.

Three ways to travel

Passenger in your wheelchair

You stay in your wheelchair and travel secured in the vehicle, usually entering by a rear ramp or lift. Ideal for most wheelchair users who do not drive.

Drive from your wheelchair

Often called a drive-from vehicle. A remote-controlled ramp lets you enter and drive without leaving your chair. These vehicles need to be matched carefully to the driver.

Transfer to a seat

You move into the driver or front passenger seat and your folded wheelchair travels with you. The vehicle needs enough room for the chair and any hoist or stowage system.

Questions to ask any seller

Common questions

Will my wheelchair fit?

Every wheelchair and every conversion is different. Measure your chair and the person sitting in it (overall length, width and height, and the height of the user's head when seated), then compare these with the vehicle's internal measurements. We can measure the vehicle for you, and you are welcome to bring your own chair for a test fit when you visit or at a home demonstration. See our buying guide for a measuring checklist.

Can I get insurance for a wheelchair accessible vehicle?

Many insurers cover wheelchair accessible vehicles, but premiums and terms vary with the type of conversion and who will be driving. We suggest getting quotes before you commit to buying. We cannot give insurance advice.

Can I buy with finance?

Finance is available as we are FCA authorised. We are a credit broker, not a lender, and we work with a panel of lenders including Motion Finance, CarFinance 247 and First Response. Our FCA firm reference number is 688533. Finance is subject to status and terms and conditions apply. See our finance page for more.

Can I part exchange my current vehicle?

Yes. We accept part exchange on both standard vehicles and wheelchair converted vehicles. Send us the details through our sell or part exchange form.

Is there a warranty?

Yes. Our own in-house warranty lasts 6 months or 6,000 miles, whichever comes first. It covers major mechanical failure only and is in addition to your statutory consumer rights. See our warranty page.

Can you deliver a vehicle from us?

Delivery is free within a 100 mile radius of our premises in Thornbury. If you would rather collect, we take £250 off the advertised price. See delivery and collection.

Do you supply Motability Scheme vehicles?

No. We are not part of the Motability Scheme and do not supply Motability Scheme vehicles. All our vehicles are for outright purchase or finance.
